- Keep your URLs short and keyword-rich. Identify a target keyword that you will optimize your content around. Make sure you haven’t used it before for another page on your website. Include the target keyword in the page URL, which should be descriptive. Separate words with dashes, keep the URL as short as possible, and eliminate stop words (connectors) wherever possible.
- Remember to distribute your keywords. Distribute target keyword and other keywords evenly throughout your content. If you try to jam too many keywords in, your content could get read as spam by search engines and penalized. Concentrate on creating reader-friendly content to help you stay on track.
- Include descriptive headers. After the information in the head section, the H1 heading (<h1></h1>) will be the first content seen by search engines and readers. H1 should be the first heading tag on your page, and should include the target keyword. Sub-headlines tell readers and search engines about the topics your page covers. Search engines give, by far, the most weight to H2 headings (<h2></h2>). Make sure your target keyword is included in at least one H2 heading, and use at least one H2 heading on your page. Sub-headings should read like a table of contents for your page.
- Pay special attention to your first few paragraphs. Include your target keyword and other relevant keywords in the first 200 words of your content. Do not keyword stuff. Include synonyms and related words and phrases throughout your piece. Concentrate on reader experience and remember that search engines penalize content that looks like spam.
- Give readers an opportunity to interact with your content. Include social media sharing links, user comments, or reviews on your page. Pages with these attributes are seen as having active visitor interactions, which is scored higher by search engines.
