Social Media Image Sizes Guide [+ FREE TEMPLATES]

As digital technology improves, so do social media networks, screen resolutions, and — combining the two — image sizes and resolutions for social networks.

There are many social media image size guides out there for individual users, but we wanted to create a go-to brief for marketers looking for brand image sizes.

Below is a simplified guide to social media image sizes and cover photos for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Instagram Stories, Pinterest, and Google+.

Want templates to create your own social media graphics? We’ve got you covered there too. Download our Social Media Image Templates to put your brand’s best face forward.

Simplifying social media image sizes

Shared images are the images that appear along with meta-data for links on social media. Twitter cards are a great example of these.

The thing is, you really only need to use two image sizes in order to have your shared images covered on social media.

The first will work on major social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn — it’s a horizontal rectangle.

Horizontal rectangle (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn):

The second size you need covers another major social network where links and images are easily shared, which is Pinterest.

Pinterest requires a vertical rectangle. This vertical rectangle can be different heights (see the Pinterest section below for more details), but in terms of selecting a meta-image, this vertical rectangle is your best bet.

Twitter Image Sizes

In-stream image:
It’s important to note that Twitter will crop the ends of a 2:1 ratio image in mobile, when viewed in a stream.

To avoid this, make sure your content falls within the guides in our template.

  • Recommended dimensions: 1024 x 512 (with space on ends for mobile — see template).
  • Maximum file size: 5 MB for photos and 3 MB for animated GIFs.
  • File formats: JPG, GIF, or PNG.
  • Can tweet up to 4 images in one tweet as a collage. Fewer than 4 photos will cause photos to be cropped for the collage differently.
  • Can edit images if tweeting from a phone app.

Instagram Stories Uploaded Image Size

If you choose to upload a recent photo to post on Instagram Stories, there are a couple of important things you should know.

  1. The photo will expand to fit the phone screen.
  2. When the photo appears, you will not be able to slide it back and forth — it will center automatically — or zoom in.

To avoid these issues, use these recommended dimensions: 1080 x 1920 pixels.
