How do I participate in a Twitter chat?
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your Twitter chat participation:
- Follow the hashtag on Twitter.com, in your social media management platform, or by using a more targeted tool like TweetChat, Twubs, or Tchat.io.
- Follow Chat Salad on Twitter for updates on all Twitter chats, and for reminders right before they start.
- Let your followers know that you will be joining the chat at least 30 minutes before it begins, so they can follow along, or at least be prepared for more tweets from your account.
- Check to see if there are rules for the specific chat your are joining ahead of time. If you can’t find rules, look at past chats for people who have participated previously, and ask them for advice.
- When participating in a Twitter chat, don’t forget to include the chosen hashtag in any tweets you want added to that conversation.
- When answering a question during the chat, make sure to start your response by citing the question you are responding to. For example, start your tweet with “A1” in response to “Q1” and so on.
- Try to answer about 75% of the questions being asked.
- Don’t indulge in promotion of yourself or your brand. The point of a Twitter chat is to contribute to the community and conversation. If you use the chat for promotion, you may be asked to leave and you likely won’t be looked upon very kindly by the participating influencers.
- Take time to interact with other people in the chat by replying to their answers with positive comments or questions. You should also quote, favorite, follow, or retweet others as appropriate, which will encourage them to do the same for you.
- Don’t dominate the conversation. Space out your replies.
